Freezing the frozen

Son Lux is an absolute genius. That’s no small praise to start this off, but it’s as good of an entry point as any, given that I’ve slept on posting anything from his debut album, At War with Walls and Mazes, until now.

The prominent colors used in the above press photo of Ryan Lott, aka he who is Son Lux, are mildly amusing to me-because, in my mildly synaesthetic brain, the music of Son Lux is nowhere near those hues. This stuff glistens in sunlight like dew, and shivers in corners when placed in darkness. With At War…finding its home on Anticon, the home of dorm-hop luminaries like Dosh and WHY? (and given press photos like the one used here), you’d be seemingly on track to expect Son Lux to sound like that dude with the kinda-beard in your Lit class, the one who always wears the Bonnaroo shirt and shows up late with The Roots audibly blaring from his iPod shuffle,  if he sucked a gallon drum of helium and invested in a cracked drum machine.

You’d be seemingly on track, and very, very wrong. Son Lux goes for the throat and the heart at once- like the Sufjan Stevens of glitch, he’s never one to let a simple sampled pizacatto string plucking ride when an entire string section, processed and chopped into a heady, swirling cocktail could play out for minutes at a time. This isn’t the music of understatement-it’s another step towards modern classical, realizing that (again, like the aforementioned Sufjan) the beauty in genius in the current remix culture is when a piece of music is crafted from the ground up by hand, and yet still remains firmly within a pop gensis context.

While this isn’t the most brilliant or jaw-dropping of the 7 songs on At War With Walls and Mazes, it’s the one that first elicited a repeat play from me (and then served as the catalyst for my starting the album over, from the beginning, and actually listen), and is my go-to Son Lux song. Those first twelve seconds hold and wash like Bono was about to break free from Eno’s console control, and then a beat that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Lex records album around the time of Boom Bip flows forth from the ambiance. Then…wind instruments. And Ryan’s always-pained vocals, intoning essentially the same kinda-pathetic and therefore-heartbreaking plea through the whole song.  At the 3:30 breakdown, it becomes clear this is a movement in three parts, with the genius belied by the simplicity. I think…and I might be wrong…that this is the future of modern pop. And I welcome it.

I DARE YOU TO TAKE THIS SONG ON. I double-dog dare you. THIS is the song that made me realize I absolutely had to post on Son Lux, because he’s simply a modern compositional genius.He takes My Brightest Diamond on as a muse, allows the dark iceprincess persona of her new album to permeate his sonic architecture, and then…fucking wrecks it with industrial jungle and that string section. If you doubt the sheer force this combination has, there are so, so many moments I could point you towards: 2:30, for example, when the first real “blow-up” happens, or the 3:30 syncapation of drums and strings and Shara’s wordless coo.  Whatever, though-this whole thing is jaw-dropping perfection.

This, as of right now, is my favorite remix of the year, and shall probably remain so.

Build it up to tear it down

So, say you’re in the south. Which you may be. Unless you live next door to Patti, at which point you’re most assuredly not from deep in the heart of Dixie.

If that’s the case, just don’t listen. Unless you’re spending time with friends. Loved ones. Maybe you’re in town because you want to, for some strange reason, go to DSC.

Regardless, you should know that Res favorite and all-around awesome purveyor of the baroque pop thing that both Trixie and I occasionally and verbosely proclaim our undying love for (more oft than not on Thursdays) Shara “My Brightest Diamond” Worden will not only be opening for Rasputina’s Vinyl Show in Atlanta (where we at Res, once upon a time in our halcyon (+on+on) days, caught this band you may have heard of, Rock Kills Kid, way back when they…um…made music?…) tomorrow, August 1st, but will also be playing the way-cool and highly intimate environment of Wordsmiths Books in Decatur (last known for hosting the St Vincent album release show).

The Wordsmiths show is solo, acoustic, free, and starts at 4pm. Or, just grab this hand-dandy flyer:

While Trixie and I may disagree (I find this track pale compared to the restrained sudden bow-snap psychebreak of the original to this remix, and the rest of the remix album, which chooses to enhance the ambient passages of the originals, is infinitely better), here’s a bit of Shara doing her “Freak Out”:

Dance Till You Drop (So You Don’t Drop Out)

Hey, kids! Trixie here, for the first time on the new site. As many of you know, I’m finishing up my Master’s Degree at Rave School (as my roommate calls it), so this semester is already driving me to want nothing more than a good release. While shaking it on the floor to some dance punk is good for half of what ails me, I’m really missing my undergrad days when I would hop in the car, drive to the nearest (or not so nearest) party and lose it to some boshing, hard progressive house or drum and bass. As such, I’m sharing with you what I have been caning while programming microchips and writing lit reviews:

FC Shuttle have put out a lovely little double A-Side called Smaul02. “Zzzipper” is a humming slow burner, a perfect track for an opening DJ to warm a crowd up without knocking them out to early. “Hippozaun” starts out bubbly before finding a groove that effortlessly straddles anticipation and dread, two feelings ravers know go hand in hand more often than not. It’s perfect for opening the main set.

Both of these are available via eMusic– I’m not going to hand these out, since it’s both sides of a single, and I’d like to see someone supporting dance music artists again.

Next up is Hokkaido & Newman with “Sushi Room.” The release has three versions– Main, Dub, and Original, and they’re all good (and really distinct, unusual for progressive trance). I haven’t the SLIGHTEST idea who these guys are. All I know is that on the dub mix of this driving, 4 am and no where near close to going home gem, they bang harder than anything I’ve heard in a long time while still keeping a melody.

If four on the floor isn’t really your speed, CLS & Wax have put out two slices of great drum and bass. “Full of Strange” is not so intelligent as to be only appropriate for cocktail parties (and everyone knows you can’t dance with a martini in your hand) but still manages to be pretty, late 90’s space sparkles threaded through rat-a-tat machine gun fire high hats. The flip is a little deeper, with a pinch of nu-jazz funk rendered pretentiousless with a synth arpeggio that calls to mind Zelda games on the Super Nintendo.

Finally, if you just can’t dance to anything that doesn’t have indie rock cred and you’d rather be seen out without pants than phat ones, Sufjan collaborater and long-time friend of Resonator (through Shaun) My Brightest Diamond has a remix album on the way. While most of it is unlikely to have glowstick wavers shove their heads in bassbins, the Gold Chains Panique Mix of “Freak Out” makes me crave a wide open, sweaty, dark dance floor like an overheated raver craves free bottled water.
