suddenly completely suddenly complete me

Canadian singer-songwriter Barzin came to my conscious completely at random and has suddenly filled it nearly entirely. His most recent album, this year’s Notes To An Absent Lover, is a soft, subtle and gorgeous study in how to transmute loveloss into tender art.

Barzin: Look What Love Has Turned Us Into

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Notes To An Absent Lover works in a way that many similar albums simply can’t, in that you can splinter sections off of it and they function as equally powerful, albeit quiet, testaments to the album’s beauty as it would taken as a whole. “Look What Love Has Turned Us Into” is obviously a personal statement, but it could’ve been written with hands shaking or calm, from a distance or in the center of the storm as two people drift apart. Barzin’s sheer lyrical skill, incredibly emotive voice and simple instrumentation (initially seeming to be nothing that couldn’t be found at a coffeehouse and then, with headphones on, revealing to be layers upon layers of texture) all work to keep the album meaningful without ever resorting to trite emo-territory. Heartstrings are plucked and pulled here, but never broken. It’s because of that intelligence, through that simple logic (there are never any “oh my god please come home” sentiments here, though an intelligent listener such as yourself can read between the lines), that these songs are made all the deeper.

For gray days and plaintive moments, this is just a stunningly beautiful record.

To do better, to be better

Brooklyn’s Ivana XL has a voice that’s made for an iPod on an overcast day. Part whiskey-soaked kiss-off, part hushed back-room confessional, this girl may only have her guitar to keep her musically company but her razor-sharp barbed lyrics, drawn out slowly, pointedly, poignantly, makes her music sound powerfully free of adornment.

Ivana XL: Black Eye

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Take, for instance, “Black Eye”, from her first EP. When, over the course of a few minutes, she strings out the line

I dyed my hair black
like the girl you first loved
now you’re gonna love me, too
and love me just as much

it feels like a velvety suckerpunch, and sounds like a drunken Cat Power finally being honest with herself for the first time. There’s a gentle, gradual unhinging in Ivana’s delivery that’s endearing, and it’s what makes her compelling and borderline addictive.  This is acoustic singer/songwriter slow-core, and with just her voice and guitar Ivana matches both the heartbreak and the slow, gradual claustrophobia of, for instance, Low.  The difference? Low will murder you in your sleep-Ivana’s going to spit daggers until you bleed to death.

Check Ivana’s Myspace for more. There’s really nothing else I can say other than: listen.

Swagga Like Grammys: the Grammy Blog

Silly me. i neglected the intro: hey y’all. Grammy Blog. Lots of booze, as usual, but this time it’s the Res away team-myself (shaun), Dr Shlomo Zelig, Bette Noire and, eventually, LauterHaus, when she, you know, gets here.If you doubt the Grammy Live-blog abilities, or if you’re thinking about reading (ew, shudder) Stereogum, just don’t. Realize that no one, NO ONE, on the corner has swagga like res. Or sweet tea vodka like res. Also come ON, Ye West is our BOY.
6:33 Aight. Thus it begins. The Firefly Sweet Tea vodka drinks are being poured, Ryan Effing Seacrest is doing some stupid E interviews, and. Oh by E interviews I mean the network. Ok, a conversation is occurring about Sweet Tea vodka. I’ll keep updating this. Lil Wayne should get the Grammy for…everything.
6:39 completely missed transcribing the conversation about how Radiohead’s a bunch of shit. As such, best I can do is that apparently now there’s a discussion about the MLA format for writing and New England/Maine accents.
6:40 Dr Shlomo Zelig: “Radiohead wishes they were as relevant as Kanye West is”. Yeah but what was Radiohead say to the kids? “Hey kids, our album’s free”
taking this under a cut as though we were on a boat.

everybody look at me, ’cause i’m on a f**kin blog

Oh, what the hell: tonight. 7pm EST-ish tonight. Live Grammy Blog. HERE.

here come your friends…again.

Kudos to big.peaches from the wayne fishell experiment (all lowercase, all the time) for pointing out to me that one of my favorite Atlanta bands, Hope For Agoldensummer (that I will miss, with all my heart, when I leave, and am determined to find a way to get to play New York gigs with a recurrent passion and fervor), shot a video for one of the standout songs on their Ariadne Thread album, “4th Night”.

Hope for Agoldensummer - 4th Night from jason miller on Vimeo.

There’s nothing I can say further about this song that I didn’t already write the day it kinda-sorta-maybe saved my life, or at least got me on steadier footing. The video, however, definitely features the sisters Campbell, a photo of third H FAGS member Deb Davis playing an accordion, and a farmer’s market that appears to either be in Acworth or Buford GA, or maybe possibly Buford Highway (GA locals represent!).

If you haven’t already gotten your hands on Ariadne Thread, do so at the H FAGS site. It’s a gorgeous collection of dark, melancholy, often-strange folk. You’ll have to content yourself with an MP3 download, though, as I think the hand-stitched hand-illustrated CDs have long since run out.

Remix 39:

So this week I’m posting the best tracks from the past couple times I attempted to write a remix post (and failed). Enjoy = p

I like this better than the Diplo one as it uses all the basic elements I try to employ while remixing, yet it gets pulled off oh so much better.

In A New York minute (this is enormous, this is a tidalwave)

You won’t often find a lot of personal revelation from those of us here at Res Mag posted within these four virtual walls. With a beg of pardon and a tumultuous hesitance, I am about to beg your mother-effing pardon, dear and gentle readers, because there’s a major change happening in your Resonator Magazine world. For the longest time, the team that started Resonator as a method of, honestly, having an uncensored forum to blather about music we love while continuing to get free music and guest list spots without having to write about, say, Animal Collective (though, god, I really should post my half-dissertation on how the fat kids are taking ecstasy these days), operated as splits of a whole. Not any longer. As of April of this year, I’m trading this(the skyline of Atlanta, GA, for those of you who don’t know)for thisand relocating to join Trixie and Hacks in NYC.It’s entirely possible, in fact very possible, in fact highly freaking likely, you’re going to see some major changes in how you get your Res fix coming fast and furious once we have the ability to actually work together again. For me, personally, this is empowering. Exhilarating. Terrifying beyond any belief. To keep the disclosure minor and poignant (too late), I won’t get into *why* I’m moving, and will frame it out for you as such:we have big, big plans for what Resonator is, and what it does. So…watch for that. And, um, I may need to impose on someone to buy me a drink at some point. One of my first bits of excitement in terms of my northern relocation is to finally get to start checking out the awesome stuff the folks at Get Weird, functioning out of New Museum, have been putting together for a while. I’ll be up there covering Feb 13th’s breath-stopping dual line-up of Grouper (yes, fucking GROUPER is fucking playing a fucking show) and High Places, both of whom I’ve extolled love for here in the past.High Places: Visions The First

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Grouper: Heavy Water (PhaseOneEdit)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Basically, a bunch of quiet songs and weird, freaky noises to welcome me to a place I’m going to have to make serve as my new home very, very quickly.Scared? I’m bloody fucking scared senseless. But I’ll make it work. Watch for a new and improved Resonator in 2009.
