Binary Presents: Short Circuit

Short Circuit

Resonator’s Favorite Binary hit us up with some tracks a little while back by their newly re-named artist Short Circuit, and it would a shame for me to horde them any longer.

Short Circuit is the artist formerly known as On Off On, but lost a fight to the death with a trumpet player and was forced to resurrect as… well Short Circuit. To celebrate, we’ve been hit up with a new track and some quality remixes. He’s working on an EP for Binary Records slated for a summer release, so this is just a preview of what’s to come.

“Music Machine” is a great driving track, suitable for the dark gritty hours of the night when people are in the throes of dance. I would best describe it as…. well hard techy trance. Whatever. It doesn’t sound like French men farting, so if you gave Shaun enough uppers I’m sure he would dance his ass off to it and not even realize (hopefully you don’t have to do that with your dancefloor!)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Short Circuit - “Music Machine” (320)

“Nothing on the TV” is the polar opposite of “Music Machine” its a catchy, bouncy little synth-house track that’s great for your personal collection, and most likely won’t get the heads rolling on the dance floor.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Short Circuit Feat. LexiconDon - Nothings on the TV (Turn the Radio on)” (320)

On the remix front, he he did a remix of “Taken Away”. Sure there are lots of them, but Binary says its pretty damn good. I say its pretty damn good. So guess what? Its probably pretty damn good. Take a way a little of the sidechaining, bring out the melody some more and you’ve got a great original track that doesn’t need the digitalism vocals to front it.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Digitalism - “Taken Away (Short Circuit Remix)” (320)

And, for kicks, here’s a nice chopped and glitched remix he did of an old classic”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Stardust - “Music Sounds Better With You (Short Circuit Remix)” (320)

So we sure and check out the Binary Collection if you haven’t already (hint: here’s some more posts about them) and gave them a hearty res HELO.

Charlie Cooper

No wry post titles, no puns, nothing but a heavy heart here:

According to Josh Eustis,  Charlie Cooper, the other half of Telefon Tel Aviv, beloved here at Resonator, has died.

Hello, Everyone.

It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22nd.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another’s expense.

Aside from Charlie’s singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a neice, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

Yours in Music,

Joshua Eustis

This coming right on the heels of the official release of their amazing  Immolate Yourself ,  their first album to be released on Bpitch and a record that will be on smar bestof-09 lists. The music will be missed.

This one seems sadly fitting right now:

Lioness - My Heart (Mansion Remix)

Lioness - My Love (Mansion Remix)

Mansion sent over another quality remix last night, so here’s an early morning post to get you on your way!

The Mansion Crew takes the original -a kind of house meets guitar track- and turns it into a nice little dancefloor banger. Complete with driving basslines, sidechaining, drum build ups and the great vocals from the original, its sure to find a place in your crate.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Lioness - “My Heart (Mansion Remix)”

If you check out the Lioness MySpace, you’ll also be treated to another amazing remix fellow Torontonian (is that correct? If not: it should be) Pilotpriest did as well. Remember him? The dude with awesome “My Adidas” remix from the end of 07? Well his remix of this track also delivers and we’ll see what I can do to get some more tracks of his on here.

Also, be sure and check out our previous Mansion posting for another great track, or check out their Mansion Crew MySpace to listen to all their tracks. They’re all easily available on Hype Machine if you they’re not posted on here.

I need this

I never fell head-over-heels for the TropiCali punk-noise freakouts of Abe Vigoda’s 2008 album Skeleton the way that many did, and it mostly had to do with the damn adjective before “punk-noise”. I’m not good with chilling out, islands, coconuts, mangos, tiki torches or parrots. At all. As such, though the Skeleton songs hinted at dark, noisy undercurrents, the fact that everything was counter-balanced by the sound dudes in khaki shorts and flip-flops kept it from ever, well, resonating with me (sorry, that word does still exist in the english language, despite our attempts to own it).

This year, however, the guys in Abe Vigoda have release the Reviver E.P. , and this is, in fact, exactly what I hoped for: dark, storming, droney songs sounding like Byrne/Bowie fronting a Pylon-inspired post-punk collective produced by Kevvie Shields.

The highlight of these five songs is the pretty-much-unrecognized-by-most-music-media STEVIE NICKS COVER “Wild Heart”. I’m an unabashed fan of the original (it, in fact, is the very first song on my self-curated NICKS FIXXX mix), but what Abe Vigoda does with the song’s mantras of “I love you I do” and “I need this” end up pushing the song close to the territory that R.E.M.s “So. Central Rain” treads when performed live (see also: both songs’ repeated, plaintive, “I need this”).

I mean, really, if THIS is the direction the formless and otherwise-disposable-to-me freakpunk scene of the past few years is going/growing? It’s interesting and welcome and I’ll be first in line.

Handsome Furs: All we want, baby, is everything

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

That photo of Handsome Furs’ Dan and Alexei is instant, moody, sexy brilliance. And, just one time through Handsome Furs forthcoming Face Control,I can say it evokes a similar response. Mixing a gloriously heady stew of cheap synths and fuzzy rock with Dan’s pained yelps, Face Control is gleefully imperfect. I don’t throw this comparison around a lot, if ever, but it sounds more like a New Order record than any of the recent attempts by bands at actually mimicking New Order records, and no more so than on “All We Want, Baby, Is Everything”. Lyrically, musically,  well, everything, really, is a worn-at-the-edges but beautiful-in-the-center sunrise ode to…something. Doesn’t matter. It’s about the feeling that’s generated (another thing that, obvious, New Order was about-we all know what happens when you try to isolate Bernie’s lyrics from the music…), and this song nails and bundles so many of ‘em. It soundtracks that picture and makes something a little scary and a little sexy and a little dark and pretty and fierce.

Adjust your eyes to the state of things

It is, in fact, 2009. Yes, that’s true, and the flurry of superfluous and not-so-superfluous ranting and raving about those guys who sit in a hippie Korg Circle and sing songs about blades of grass and pit-sweat and their album that is apparently the album of the FOREVER (which, I mean, was something that had been predicted the first time it leaked, straight from their imaginations) and which will serve to divide Resonator Mag in half until someone concedes that that one song is pretty good.

That said, I’ve come to realize that there was an album that pretty much dominated me for ‘08, in the way that an album, as in a cohesive set of songs flowing from one to the other and causing a repeated, addictive desire for a re-start of the entire chronology once it’s completed its’ cycle.  For me, in 2008 (and still, bleeding into the edges of 09 as we wait for something other than Merriweather Post Pavilion to surface), that album was the double-disc set of Deerhunter’s Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.

Deerhunter: Nothing Ever Happened

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Beyond being my favorite album of 2008, Microcastle  contains within it my hands-down favorite song of 2008, “Nothing Ever Happened”. The song’s swirling, melodic, psych-emotive genius perfectly encapsulates what works from start to finish on the rest of the album. As Bradford sings of small-town ennui and an outlook of expecting nothing from nothing, I’m pulled back to my hometown of Marietta, GA-interestingly enough a city that surfaces, if not in name than in thematic reference, in a handful of Deerhunter songs and certainly plays a part in their musical mythos. Marietta’s class-angst, so much potential and so little to do, so much hope and so little way for the dreaming to escape, IS what the sound of “Nothing Ever Happened” is, only, within Bradford’s song, the hope escapes out and into…something.  The lyrics, like “focus on the depths that were never there/eliminate what you can’t repair”, take the rest of Microcastle’s  Proustian qualities of bedroom stasis and actually force it into a sort of hesitant motion, in which you get the feeling that the song is pulling Bradford, rather than operating under his direction.  This, perfectly, is the sound of the small town of Marietta, Georgia. This is the sound I heard growing up.

There was a damn fantastic version of this played at the Microcastle release show in Atlanta on Halloween ‘08, and Southern Shelter has great audio recordings of all of it. I highly recommend the entire concert, front-to-back.

Deerhunter: Never Stops (Platt’s Island Sessions)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

One of the other stickiest songs on Microcastle  is the subtle, slowly-pacing-itself “Never Stops”. The night of Microcastle’s release in Atlanta, Bradford unveiled a strictly limited cassette of recordings he’d done solo, on an island somewhere, of Deerhunter music. These recordings wrap the original tunes in a cold sheen of night, and this version of “Never Stops” is sheer narcotic bliss.

Deerhunter: Octet (Simian Mobile Disco remix)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I’ve been meaning to post this one for a bit, and haven’t had an opportunity. It’s interesting to me what a couple of guys I generally tend to avoid (SMD) do to my favorite song off of one of my favorite albums of 07 (Deerhunter’s Cryptograms) …mostly because it’s heady, trippy, and it works. In spades.

As I said earlier…while I wait for 2009 to show its colors, I’m going to keep Microcastle in my headphones.
