For those who didn’t know, the Spice Cougars are back with a single that bookends their inexplicable career. When they burst on the scene with the boring “Wannabe” something like 25 years ago (ok, ok, it was 13 years ago, but it seems like ages) the power structure was QUITE different. Just watch the video:
As you can see, Vickie Beckham (then just “Posh Spice”) is barely in the video and they don’t even pretend to let her sing (she has a spoken line toward the end). It’s Scary and Ginger’s show, absolutely.
Of course, they booted Simon Cowell as their manager, kicked the second best vocalist out of the group (that would be Ginger) and then started sucking even more. The press had a field day with the tickets to their tour selling out in three seconds, but let me tell you, I’ve had run-ins with Ticketmaster where I tried to buy tickets that somehow had sold out BEFORE they even went on sale, so that didn’t surprise me.
No, what surprises me after watching the video for their new single, “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends),” is that someone actually had to come up with a treatment for this video. It must have been something like this:
Ok, so, it’s the five of them, right. And they’re in a room. And… uh… Ginger has great abs now… oh, man, and let’s put Posh in some Agent Provacateur underwear to show off those new boobs. And, yeah, no one has to dance or anything. Just wave their arms around.
At which point someone apparently signed some papers and this crap video was shot. I never thought it possible to feel nostalgic for the Spice Girls, but sometimes the new is so bad it makes the old look awesome.
