Blame the scorching heat roundabout these parts, but I’m far too tucked into a bottle of cheap Chardonnay to even begin a real post at this point. There are about eight (billion) empethrees I’d like to wax commentative on-but, instead, let’s dismantle someone else’s writing.
Spinner.com posted the top opening lines in songs, as ranked from least to greatest (thanks, Popwatch).
You know what that means….what’s missing?
For me? I don’t get why “I was dreaming when I wrote this” was chosen over that other of Prince’s hits’ best, “I guess I shoulda known by the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn’t last”. However, I stand by the non-hits “Black Sweat” (”I don’t wanna take my clothes off, but I do”) and “P Control” (”Good morning ladies and gentlemen boys and motherfucking girls”) as topping even that.
Also, Underworld’s “Born Slippy”, with “drag boy dark boy dirtynumbangelboy”, hits as one of the greatest opening lyrics.
So…tell us: what’s not on the list that should be?
As for me, I’m gonna go make like Winehouse and hit the bottle again (though hopefully my teeth will stay intact).

“as they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
you asked for the latest party.”
Diamond Dogs, David Bowie
…or the other first line of that song:
“this ain’t rock n’ roll
this is genocide.”
